Supertubos is the wave that put Peniche on the map, a sand-bottom barrel machine about an hour north of Lisbon that people call the European Pipeline. When a long-period Atlantic swell meets a crisp northeast offshore, it throws some of the squarest, heaviest tubes on the continent. It is beautiful, it is mean, and it is worth planning a whole trip around.

The wave
Shifting A-frame peaks break over a hard-packed sandbar, with a fast hollow left that tends to be the longer and more makable ride, and a shorter, even quicker right. Rides are short and intense: a steep drop straight into a square barrel over barely a foot of water, with a fine line between getting spat out and getting pinched by a closeout. It only really becomes Supertubos from head high up, and with good banks it handles well overhead and beyond.
When it works best
West to southwest groundswell with a long period, around 10 to 16 seconds, from head high up to double overhead plus.
Northeast to east winds blow straight offshore and groom the barrels, and a light north wind can work too.
Mid to high tide is the sweet spot; low tide gets faster, shallower and much more closeout-prone.
October through March is prime, and October is often the magic month, when the sandbars built over a calm summer meet the first big northwest swells and reliable offshore mornings.
Hazards & who it's for
The sandbar is shallow and packed almost solid, so pitching takeoffs and heavy closeouts put you on the bottom hard, and boards get snapped here regularly. Strong currents run on bigger swells, and the lineup gets seriously crowded with a talented local crew, especially during the WSL event and any quality run of swell.
This is an advanced wave when it is doing its thing, and expert-only once it gets overhead and hollow. On small summer days it mellows into a punchy beachbreak that confident intermediates can enjoy.
Local tips
Access is easy: a parking lot sits behind the beach near the Molhe Leste jetty, with a wooden boardwalk over the dunes, about five minutes by car or a 20 minute walk from Peniche town. Check it from the boardwalk before you commit. Experienced surfers sometimes look at Molhe Leste next door, where the jetty blocks northerly wind and swell, but know that it is a heavy, hollow, expert-level right that needs plenty of swell to break and has rocks at the base of the jetty at low tide, so it is a different challenge rather than an easier one. Afterwards, Peniche is a proper working fishing port, and the grilled fish at the harbour restaurants runs around 15 to 25 euros and is worth every cent.
Questions surfers ask
Not when it is doing what it is famous for. On tiny summer days it becomes a manageable beachbreak, but beginners are far better off ten minutes away at Baleal, where Cantinho da Baia serves gentle sandbar waves year round.
The biggest swells arrive between October and March, driven by North Atlantic storms. October is often the standout month because the summer-built sandbars are still in shape when the first serious northwest groundswells land, usually with clean offshore mornings. It also hosts the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, a World Surf League Championship Tour event.
A 4/3 covers most of the year. In winter the water drops to roughly 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, so a 4/3 with 3mm boots does the job, with a 5/3 or 5/4 only worth packing for long sessions or cold, windy days. A 3/2 is enough in late summer when it warms to around 17 to 19 degrees.
