La Gravière is the wave that made Hossegor famous, a beachbreak that barrels like a reef and breaks close enough to the sand that you can hear it from the dune. It has hosted world tour events for years, and when a clean west swell hits the banks it produces some of the heaviest tubes in Europe. This is the spot serious surfers plan whole trips around.

The wave
Shifting sandbar peaks throw out thick, sand-dredging barrels, both lefts and rights, often just meters off the beach. Rides are short and intense, usually a late drop straight into the tube, and when the banks or tide are wrong it simply closes out. It starts working around 3ft and holds well overhead, with solid days in the 8 to 12ft range that take no prisoners.
When it works best
West to northwest groundswell with plenty of period, ideally head high to a few feet overhead, though it holds up to around 12ft on the best banks.
Light offshore wind from the east to southeast, and mornings are usually your best shot before it turns.
Most guides favour lower tide stages and many locals like the drop, though it can also turn on with the early push, the banks decide, and high tide mostly shuts it down into shorebreak.
September through February is the window, with October the classic month for clean, consistent long-period swell.
Hazards & who it's for
The shorebreak is genuinely dangerous, slamming surfers into hard shallow sand, and broken boards, dinged shoulders and worse are common on bigger days. Add powerful rips, heavy closeouts, and a committed local crew plus visiting pros fighting over the best peak when it is on.
When it is doing its thing, this is an experts-only wave, and every reliable guide says the same. Confident intermediates can paddle out on small, clean days, but if you are still learning, this is not your beach.
Local tips
Park in the small free lot on Boulevard de la Dune opposite Avenue des Pervenches, about 500 m north of the town centre toward Seignosse, and walk over the dune to check the banks before you commit, ideally at first light (note that overnight parking is banned there from 20:00 to 08:00). Sandbars move around after every big swell, so what worked last week may not work today; watch a few sets and see where the locals sit. Hossegor town is minutes away for coffee, boulangeries and surf shops, and the whole place buzzes in autumn when the contest circus rolls through.

No. It breaks hard and shallow right by the shore, and the rips and shorebreak are hazardous even for strong surfers. Beginners should head to the gentler, more sheltered beaches toward southern Hossegor and Capbreton, where surf schools operate.
Autumn through winter, roughly September to February, when long-period west and northwest Atlantic swells arrive. October is the prime month, which is why the world tour traditionally ran its French event here then. The biggest days come in late autumn and winter.
Deep offshore canyons funnel raw Atlantic swell onto shallow sandbars sitting very close to the beach, so waves jack up quickly and throw thick, hollow lips. Find the right bank with an easterly wind and the tide stage the sand is favouring that week, and it barrels like a reef pass over sand.
