Ribeira d'Ilhas is the wave most people picture when they think of Ericeira: a long right that peels over reef and cobblestone at the foot of green cliffs, about 3.5 km north of town. It sits at the heart of Europe's first World Surfing Reserve, dedicated in 2011, and has been hosting contests for decades. It is also one of the friendliest reef waves on this stretch of coast, which is exactly why everyone wants a piece of it.

The wave
A right-hand point-reef that starts breaking at just over knee high and holds well past double overhead. On a good day the wall runs 200 meters or more: a punchy outside takeoff, a softer middle where it backs off, then a faster inside section that races through to the finish. On medium swells a second right called Pontinha breaks off the reef on the northern edge and spreads the pack a little.
When it works best
West-northwest groundswell is the magic direction, and the wave stays fun from around chest high all the way up to double overhead and beyond.
Anything from the east is offshore, southeast through northeast all work, and the valley behind the beach funnels offshore wind better than almost any other spot around Ericeira.
It breaks on all tides, but mid tide is the sweet spot; lower tides expose more rock on the inside.
September through April is prime, with October and November offering the best mix of swell size and offshore winds, and December statistically the most consistent month for clean surf.
Hazards & who it's for
Rocks and urchins in the lineup, rips that turn strong once the swell gets overhead, and a thick crowd whenever it is good. Localism is mild by reef-town standards, but the lineup is competitive, so read the pecking order and wait your turn.
This is the intermediate wave of Ericeira, a relatively forgiving reef where you can learn to work a long wall before graduating to heavier spots like Coxos. On small summer days the inside reforms suit supervised beginners with the local surf schools, but when it is overhead the main peak belongs to experienced surfers.
Local tips
Check it straight from the big clifftop car park, which looks down the whole point; parking is free off season and paid in summer, around 5 euros a day. There is a restaurant and bar at the top with a view of the sets, plus showers, toilets and board and wetsuit rentals nearby, and a short stairway gets you to the beach in a minute. If a WSL contest is on, usually in early autumn, the bay closes to freesurfing at times, so have Foz do Lizandro or Sao Juliao as a backup.

On small summer days, yes. The whitewater and reforms on the inside are gentle and several Ericeira surf schools teach here. The main peak is still a reef wave with rocks, currents and a crowd, so beginners should stick to the inside or go with a school.
Winter, roughly December through February, when North Atlantic groundswells push it to double overhead and more. Autumn usually gives the best balance of solid size and clean offshore conditions.
Very. It is the most famous wave in a surf town and the reserve's showcase break, so expect a packed lineup any time it is good. Dawn starts and midweek winter sessions are your best chance of space.
