Tonel sits right under the Sagres fortress, a wedge of sand boxed in by tall cliffs on the raw southwest corner of the Algarve. It picks up almost any west swell going, which makes it one of the most consistent beachbreaks in the region. When the banks are good and the wind stays east, it goes from fun to properly punchy.

The wave
Shifty beachbreak peaks over sand, lefts and rights, with quick takeoffs and short, fast rides. On the right day the central banks throw zippy A-frames and the odd shorebreak barrel, especially when the period picks up. Big, straight west swells tend to close it out across the beach, so it has a ceiling.
When it works best
West swell is the sweet spot, though it takes anything from west-southwest to northwest, working from about waist high up to a couple of meters before it starts closing out.
East to northeast wind blows straight offshore, and the cliffs give the beach a bit of extra shelter from anything else.
Low to mid tide is best for shape and speed; full high brings backwash off the cliffs, a heavier shorebreak, and barely any beach left to stand on.
October to April is prime, with December statistically the most consistent month, while summer runs smaller with early morning windows before the northwest sea breeze arrives.
Hazards & who it's for
Rocks lurk along the cliff bases and on the right side of the beach, the rips are strong, and bigger days add heavy shorebreak and backwash. The cliffs themselves shed rocks, so do not sit under them, and the lineup gets busy in summer with schools and travelers spread across the peaks.
This is an intermediate's wave at heart, ideal for working on fast takeoffs and reading rips, and advanced surfers get plenty out of the punchier winter days. Beginners should only paddle out on small, clean days, ideally with one of the local schools, and stay mid beach away from the rocks.
Local tips
Park free on the cliff top off the N268-2 or in the bigger fortress lot about 300 meters away, then walk down the ramp through the rocks; you can check the whole beach from the cliff before committing. There is a small beach bar and toilets, lifeguards in summer, and Sagres town is five minutes away for rentals, food, and everything else. If Tonel is maxed out, Beliche around the corner is a semi-sheltered cove that takes less of the swell, and Mareta in town is the most protected beach in Sagres, the one to check when the west coast is huge and blown out or a south swell is running.
Questions surfers ask
Only on small, clean days, roughly waist high or less. There is a surf school working the beach and summer waves are friendlier, but the rips and the rocks on the right side make it a poor choice for a first-ever session when there is real swell.
Winter, roughly December through February, when Atlantic west and northwest swells hit it head on and overhead days are common. December is the most consistent month, though the biggest swells often close it out and more sheltered Beliche becomes the better call.
It can be. Easy access and reliable swell pull in locals, surf schools, and travelers, so it gets busy in summer high season. The crowd bunches up on the best bank, so walking down the beach usually finds you a quieter peak.
